Purpose

Kirk Guthaus

I have been active as a professional musician, specializing in classical guitar and other fretted instruments, for nearly 20 years. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to perform at venues and events all around the world. I studied guitar and jazz studies at Michigan State University, which led to an 11-year career performing with the U.S. Army Bands.

After my time in the Army, I transitioned into working in public education, focusing on special education, where I continue to integrate music into the classroom to support student growth and learning. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, a Master’s degree in Humanities, and certificates in Autism Education, Musicianship, Ethnomusicology, and Music Research. I am currently pursuing a Master of Music in Music Education to further strengthen my skills as both an educator and performer.

My philosophy of music education, which I call Adaptive Music, focuses on making music accessible to learners of all abilities. Through this approach, I work with nonprofit organizations, helping them design and develop their own adaptive music programs to better serve diverse communities.

Through performance, teaching, and collaboration, I strive to create musical experiences that are inclusive, inspiring, and transformative.

Inspiration

After experiencing accidents and injuries during my military service, I have lived with chronic pain and physical health challenges that have greatly impacted my ability to play music. This journey through rehabilitation has taught me the importance of developing adaptive and alternative methods for playing my instruments. Through this personal experience, I have gained a deeper understanding of how to modify techniques and approaches to keep music-making accessible.
In working with students with special needs, I have been able to apply these adaptive methods in the classroom, creating inclusive ways for all students to engage in music performance regardless of their physical, cognitive, or emotional challenges. This work reflects my belief that music should be accessible to everyone and that with creativity and flexibility, meaningful musical expression is always possible.
