At Adaptive Music LLC, research is an important part of our mission. We believe that every person deserves meaningful opportunities to engage in music, build relationships, express themselves, and participate fully in their community.
Our research explores how adaptive and community-based music experiences support social connection, communication, confidence, self-expression, and belonging for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Through partnerships with universities, nonprofit organizations, families, and community musicians, we work to better understand how music can create pathways to inclusion and lifelong learning.
Our work is guided by the principle of Access Before Mastery—the belief that meaningful participation should come before technical perfection. When individuals are given access to music-making, opportunities for growth, learning, and community naturally follow.
Investigating how group music experiences support friendships, collaboration, communication, and a sense of belonging among participants.
Exploring instructional strategies that increase accessibility and engagement for individuals with diverse learning and support needs.
Examining how music provides opportunities for creativity, emotional expression, identity development, and confidence building.
Studying environments where individuals with and without disabilities learn and create music together as equal participants.
Understanding how ongoing participation in music contributes to well-being, independence, community engagement, and personal fulfillment.
