Research

Advancing Access, Belonging, and Community Through Music

At Adaptive Music LLC, research is an important part of our mission. We believe that every person deserves meaningful opportunities to engage in music, build relationships, express themselves, and participate fully in their community.

Our research explores how adaptive and community-based music experiences support social connection, communication, confidence, self-expression, and belonging for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Through partnerships with universities, nonprofit organizations, families, and community musicians, we work to better understand how music can create pathways to inclusion and lifelong learning.

Our work is guided by the principle of Access Before Mastery—the belief that meaningful participation should come before technical perfection. When individuals are given access to music-making, opportunities for growth, learning, and community naturally follow.

Access Before Mastery Initiative

This ongoing line of inquiry explores how reducing barriers to participation affects engagement and learning outcomes in community music settings.

Key questions include:

  • What happens when access is prioritized over performance?
  • How does participation influence confidence and motivation?
  • How can music educators create more welcoming environments for diverse learners?

Findings from this work continue to inform Adaptive Music LLC programming and professional development initiatives.
